Don't get Bog'd down
I feel a bit like Cinderella. . . or maybe one of the pretty young girls hoping the fancy glass slipper will fit but deep down I know I’m not the one. Oh, swooon. Please let this giant rubber boot fit so I can go work and put up fencing. Yeah!
Oh, swoon, please let these hiking boots fit so I can go hike above The Bog and find the fun peaks of Stiperstones that were the only things pointing their little necks above the glaciers way back when.
Yup. I’ve been doing a lot of swooning since I still don’t have my luggage. In theory it will be delivered between 0:00 and 2:00 tomorrow. Yes, 0:00 and 2:00. Way out in the country. So weird.
So far things have fit so I have no excuse not to work or hike or whatever. I just have to do some wash every night so I have clean undies. Next time I’m definitely including a pair of underwear in my carry on. And pit stick.
Anyways… the following happened after a lovely lunch. I’m writing this one during my patient wait for my luggage to arrive between 0 and 2. Hmm. It’s late.
After lunch we drove to the Bog and checked out the visitor center. Nifty place for tea. They also have a very nice bathroom. Ahhhh. We then drove up the hill a bit, parked and started walking. There are paths to take… that don’t take you really where you want. We see a fellow sitting on the path. M asks, “Is this the way to the Stiperstones?” “Where are you from?” clearly fixating on our accents… and eventually, “Oh, I got tired so I just sat here to wait for my wife.” No, he never answered her question.
So we went on a bit further and there was a lady coming through another gate. I ask her how we can get up to the Devil’s chair. She gives us a very long winded answer. We end up walking up the road and discover, after about 3/4 mile that there is another parking lot much closer to our destination. Ah well. And so we hike up. Listen to birds. Have brief chats. See friendly dogs. See the pokey rocks at the top. Walk on the very rough trail that reminds me of Hawaii… and finally get to Devil’s chair. The view of the surrounding hills and dales are amazing. We speak with a woman and she tells us to turn left down there and you’ll hit a road… We go for it and despite the lack of signs and our own fear that we’ll end up having to turn around we somehow turn our hike into a big loop and end up back at the car. Maybe 4.5 miles. Phew. Then back to the visitor center and my second real cuppa tea.
